Kode Wave 82 Carbon, WIND (France), Feb 2014 [EN-FR]

The Kode Wave is fast to get on the plane with remarkable top end speed for taking jumps into the stratosphere. The Kode Wave is Philip Koster’s fast, aerial style ‘next-generation’ signature wave board. It just wants to boost whether it’s jumping or waveriding, with excellent projection above the lip along with being able to spin around it. For 2014, the Kode Wave is shorter, making it lighter on the scale and under the feet, as swing weight is reduced.

The following test was featured in the 2014 Special Test edition of WIND Magazine, along with 16 other wave boards between 74 and 86 liters. The Kode Wave managed to get top grades in early planing, maneuverability and performance in average waves.

Design:

Three centimeters shorter, this year’s Kode 82 remains quite large for its volume. It also gets rounder in the back, with a bit more hips between the footstraps. The fittings are top quality and the board can be ridden with a single fin or twinzers. Construction-wise, the Carbon technology has a carbon deck and wood bottom for comfort.

On the Water:

The Kode Wave 82 shines by its behavior in lighter wind conditions, where you can easily pair it with a 5.4m² or even a 5.7m². It gets planing extremely quickly, with excellent acceleration. This year, the Kode has improved greatly in terms of feel on the water and the gain in comfort and control is quite noticeable. The Starboard rides a bit lower than before, which actually improves its wind range, especially in the higher wind conditions. We’ve sailed this board down to a 4.0m² without being bothered one bit.

In the surf, it is easy and radical at the same time. Easy because its shape forgives mistakes such as foot placement or pressure, because it generates speed easily and because the Kode is extremely at ease in mushy waves. Its radical side is seen by its ability to turn tight and with power but also by its capacity to throw all the modern moves such as takas, 360, off-the-lips and anything else you can think of. However, the Kode will find its limits when drawing big lines on big waves, where control and speed can be hard to maintain unless you are both a powerful and technical sailor. Last point, this devilishly efficient side-on shore board provides excellent reaching ability. When using big sails in light winds, it doesn’t provide as much fin support as other boards with other fin configurations would. But since you can fit it with a single fin as well, it’s not much of a problem.

Verdict:

Thanks to noticeable improvements in control and comfort, the Starboard Kode Wave 82 places itself amongst the boards to watch this year. Fast, efficient and extremely playful in the surf; especially in mushier waves; this board is a real weapon for side-on shore conditions thanks to the right mix of accessibility and radicalness.
