ULTRA PLANING

Designed around the concept of Ultra planing: maximum efficiency in the lightest winds.

When there’s barely white caps on the water, the UltraSonic 147 gets going and flies on the water. With every gust and every wave, you can tune the board to foil up and fly, picking up speed and passing lulls like they’re not even there.

For 2018, the UltraSonic is fitted with a reinforced Foil Box instead of a Deep Tuttle, making it ‘Ready to Foil’. It also receives our new racing graphics.

It is offered in two technologies: our new Carbon L.C.F. construction designed for the lowest weight but also the lowest carbon footprint and our Carbon Reflex construction, our very lightest technology that uses the most exclusive, lightest biaxial grade carbon fibres for an even lighter weight on the scales.

OUTLINES

The UltraSonic continues from last year with our new racing graphics and new Carbon L.C.F. technology.

It is longer than the regular iSonics to glide onto the plane more efficiently, while also making tacking and jibing easier.

ROCKERLINE

The UltraSonic design starts from the iSonic base and loses more thickness for a wide and slim profile. The current shape is 7mm thinner than the previous generation for a wide wind range.

The zero tail-kick rocker provides a smooth entry into planing while making the board easy to control when fully powered up.

CUT-AWAYS

The cut-away shapes, combined with the side cut-outs and heel extensions reduce wetted area for the same lift, which makes it more efficient. The fin gains traction and the board locks on to its fin.

Most importantly, the width of the tail remains identical to provide power, anti-roll stability through chop and acceleration out of a jibe.

HEEL EXTENSIONS

Heel extensions allow the back foot to apply a positive pressure on the rail.

Without them, there would be a slippery angle of the rail and your back foot would fail to provide constant power.

RAILS

Under the footstraps, the rails are more comfortable and less boxy than on the iSonics.

This makes the board more comfortable, the straps are easier to get into and there is less burning-power in your back thigh when fully-powered.

The UltraSonic is supplied with the highest performance Drake Race 58 Ready to Race fin with a quick and efficient foil and a near vertical rake angle that generates massive power for early planing and outstanding accelerations in light winds.

The UltraSonic is fitted with a reinforced Foil Box instead of a Deep Tuttle, making it 'Ready to Foil'.

The Foil Box is larger than a regular Tuttle Box to distribute loads over a larger area and heavily reinforced to handle the forces exerted by the foil.



DRAKE ULTRALIGHT STRAPS

DRAKE ULTRALIGHT STRAPS

The UltraSonic is fitted with the next iteration of Drake UltraLight footstraps.

These hydrophobic footstraps weigh 99 grams dry, saving up to 232 grams dry and 676 grams when wet.

Two layers of Kevlar X-Ply monofilm replace the internal plastic strip to keep the footstrap comfortable, light and flexible and eliminate any stretch.

CARBON L.C.F.

The UltraSonic 147 is available in our new Carbon L.C.F. construction designed for the lightest weight but also the lowest carbon footprint.

At 86 kg of CO2 emissions for a 117 liter board, Carbon L.C.F. is our most environmentally-friendly board yet, using bio resin and our exclusive end-grain Balsa sandwich core.

Our bio-resin has half the carbon emissions footprint as conventional epoxy resin and end-grain Balsa has a tenth of the footprint of conventional PVC sandwich cores.

 

Boards built using the Carbon L.C.F. technology use Smart Carbon vectors: putting the carbon smartly in the right places for an optimized combination of stiffness, flex and feel and ultimately allowing us to use less of it.

 

We've also removed all plastic from our packaging: bubble-wrap, plastic dust bags and EPS blocks have been replaced with honeycomb and corrugated cardboard to further reduce the carbon footprint of a Starboard.

CO2 EMISSIONS PER TECHNOLOGY

CARBON REFLEX

Carbon Reflex is our flagship technology, built to be lightest and fastest.

The deck uses the lightest grade of biaxial and uni-directional carbon fibre orientated between 45, 30 and 0 degrees for optimized flex and reflex characteristics.

The bottom of the board uses an even lighter grade of uni-directional carbon fibre from nose to tail, with an extra 45 degree biaxial carbon layer in the tail area for added torsional stiffness.
