View Full Version : E83 upgrading to E80 ?

I have a E83 ( 06 ) and would upgrade to E80 ( 07 ) to have a little better grip on frontfoot surfing with 6Bft cross-off.Weight 82Kg.
I have found a limitation when being in fast big waves to secure the bottom turn and concentrate on the lip, i feel not very confident and sensitive with E83.On the other hand from 4/5 Bft the E83 is the weapon.
My Spot is 4Bft in the white waters and 6Bft behind the breaking waves with powerfull side/cross shore wind.
I don't want to sacrify the volume, want the same as E83 stability but a better grip in bottom, but also i would preserve the fast slashing pivot ...

Can someone tell me if the E80 is the candidate or do i need to switch to Acid ? Love Evo since E74 ...

I'm not really the right person to answer since I'm a fair bit lighter than you (69). My prediction however, is that you will indeed get a better feel from the 2007 E80. The reason I think this is that while I liked the E83 a lot myself, especially in more wind I ran into the same difficulties you describe. It was like the board ran away from me. Interestingly, I rode the E83 (a very big board for me) on Maui, at Kanaha in fairly good size waves (2-3m faces) but in light winds and then it performed almost unreasonably well, despite the actual riding speed probably being higher than in powerted up 4.5 "euro conditions". So, for me the actual sail power/wind speed proved critical on the 83.

The 80 on the other hand, is looser when you go rail to rail to set up the cutback turn. This makes it less critical to powered up sailing for me. I wouldn't exactly describe it as better grip, but whatever it is it sure makes me more confident.

If these things translates to your weight, then I believe you will be happier on the E80, indeed. An Acid will give you a more direct feel in the bottom turn, but they are in fact also stiffer i the turn and in my opinion doens?? make it easier to focus on the lip, at least not if you have a kind of vertical approach to your wave riding.

I'll try to get Scotty to comment too. He's around your weight.

Gd'ay Shangu
Looks like a fun place to sail.
I would say for sure.
I prefer the new 80 as have a lot of my mates on a recent trip to the north wezt of australia where it's a powerful down the line wave.
Everyone was loving it there.
You won't be disappointed

So a little smoother for rail to rail, more confident.
Back foot seems as large as E83 on the paper, so it really looks as a cosmetic change on that point, change is probably somewhere else in the shape ... i have to examine the product as soon as i found a specimen in a shop.

I haven't measured the actual tail difference, but the E80 feels narrover, for sure. The bottom/rocker has changed substantially though, so no surprise the boards feels very different on water.
