Hi MCross,
that sounds great. Would be interesting to test the Ultra Sonic directly against the iSonic 130 through all weight classes and with all suitable sailsizes. What'S your impression on jibing in really light wind conditions. Does the Ultra Sonic plan with less wind through jibes. What sail sizes did you use on that board in 12 knots? Discussons about that topic were on at the Annual General Meeting of the Council by the IFCA in 2013. See point 11: http://ifca.internationalwindsurfing...age0284v01.htm All the best, Chris

Hi Mcross 19,
that sounds interesting.Would be cool to see the board used in a race against the iSonic130. What sail and fin size did you use in 12 knots? The topic concerning wider boards in Slalom racing was discussed by the IFCA back in 2013, May at Sylt (annual General Meeting of the Council) Check out the link: http://ifca.internationalwindsurfing...age0284v01.htm Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris, obviously we know the outcome of the meeting but was the voting close?
I was using a 56cm G10 R13 Drake near vertical race fin and 8.6m Turbo on the 2013 US, probably could have gone a touch smaller fin wise once the wind was a constant 12/13 knots. Right who's got a 130 isonic in the UK? Martin

Hi Guys
I am just under 100kg and for my sins living in a light wind area. I have tried many 85 wide slalom boards, most of the 90 and 90+ wide boards. With 9.5 to 10m sails, no question that the wider boards have a significant advantage in marginal winds. Boards like the latest Ultrasonic and Exocet RS7 don't give up anything in speed to the 85 wide boards in my opinion in the wind range we are talking about. The current Ultrasonic rides like a full on slalom board. The bigger fin it carries allows a real advantage in that it can out point smaller boards when needed. It's rough where I sail for the light wind and I can confirm that the Ultrasonic really does sail fast in such chop(much better than the original Ultrasonic) Its footstraps are also better placed on the rail. I think its a no brainer for larger guys to sail these boards in 8-12 knot wind slalom. Too many slalom events compromised by cancelled heats, marginal wind. No event = no more sponsorship. Easy to say, hold events only where its windy, but the PWA has to be reactive and sail where sponsors come up with the funds, otherwise the tour will just fade away, which no one wants |

Great points there and good to hear from someone who has tried and tested both boards back to back.
Already the smaller guys (Sean, Taty) don't win the overall title and never will if they change the rules to allow for wider boards. So are we saying that we want 90cm wide boards which will effectively put off any sub 90kg riders from competing?

No, I don't think so.
The lightweights will keep the advantage in the super light conditions. But a 90+ wide board will also keep the chances fair for a heavyweight. Perhaps he will not win the event but he will be able to reduce the damage. Not like what happened now in Turkmenistan.

I think there should be a rule change, but putting constraints on the light wind equipment will only hinder light wind development. I really think that one sail and one board should be without limits. since the wind limit is so low, otherwise i think the 6,3 rule is fine. This way heavy guys could pick a formula for lightwind slalom, or build a custom 120wide slalomboard and a 14m sail.
I have compared my isonic 127 against my f2 formula from 2006, and with my 85kg 190cm, I´m always better of with the formula if the wind is below 12knots. I have a 9.5 sail as my biggest. Compare these two videos First is Isonic 127, second is formula, same 40cm weedfin and same sail. The wind dropped of a little so i switched to the formula and it was easier to get going, although the formula is harder to pump. I think i was going faster on the formula in less wind. Friend is on 17m kite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjW7GirxvKk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfgQwXxX5qE Maybe time to market a 120cm wide slalom board? |

Hi Kapten K, I really don't see the need for a 120cm wide board, 90 or maybe 95cm max is all that is needed.
Nice videos and you are clearly faster than your kiting friend, do you not think it would be a good idea to sell both the isonic and formula board and replace them with an US147?

At Weymouth speedweek last year, we had a couple of light wind days. On oned day in particular it was marginal planing wind, even with the 9.5m on an 85cm wide slalom board - probably gusting 12 knotts. Even though the formula boards were planing the whole time and slalom boards spend most of their time waiting for the very few gusts that came through, when the results were analysed, all of the top speeds were 80 to 85cm wide slalom boards. So my conclusion is that a slalom board is faster, once planing, than a formula board. However, not sure how an Is147 would have done.... anyone want to lend me one for this years speed week?
